Understanding Childrens’ Rights

The UNCRC and Children’s Rights

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is an important, legally binding agreement signed by 196 countries (as of 12 July 2022) which outlines the fundamental rights of every child, regardless of their race, religion or abilities. The UNCRC is the most complete statement of children’s rights ever produced and is the most widely-ratified international human rights treaty in history.

The Children and Young Peoples Commissioner for Scotland has produced a helpful video which explains the rights of children and young people under the UNCRC which you can watch below.

The Scottish Government has also released a video on children’s rights which can be viewed below.

Children’s Rights

The videos below have been produced with children in mind. You may hear children or young people talking about the UNCRC as it is an important part of their education in Scotland. These videos have been specially made for children and young people to help them to understand their rights as we work to ensure that all children are supported to understand and be able to protect their rights.

Listen to a story about Children’s Rights in Scotland for younger children, read by Children and Young People’s Commissioner for Scotland, Nicola Killean – Let’s Explore Our Rights.

For younger children, take a look at this video from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Scotland:
