Relationships

What you told us

Some of you told us about enduring positive relationships with residential childcare staff and sustained support when you were struggling with family relationships. For others, family relationships have not been supported and this has been exacerbated by changes in staff, particularly in social work.

Our Commitment

Orkney is committed to ensuring that care leavers have lifelong relationships, trusted support networks, and opportunities to remain connected to the people and communities that matter to them. We recognise the experience of multiple social workers has affected the offer to care leavers and we are committed to improving.

Care leavers will receive

  • An allocated worker, where appropriate, to provide advice, guidance, and practical help whenever it is needed.
  • Support to promote positive relationships with family, siblings, friends, carers, professionals, and the wider community.
  • Access to advocacy, family support, youth groups, peer networks, mentoring, counselling, and specialist services that help them strengthen relationships.
  • Consistent with the principles of The Promise, services such as Rendall Road Children’s Home remain committed to maintaining meaningful connections and continuing support beyond formal service boundaries. We recognise that relationships should not end simply because a young person reaches a particular age.
