Care Leavers – Further Health and Wellbeing Information

It is vital we look after our mental and physical health. The services below are ready to help with practical advice and support:

NHS Orkney

Health colleagues are involved in the pathways planning process for care leavers, which collates information to support their transition.

(the following relates largely to school aged young people)

  • Health services, such as dentists, opticians, and doctors, will expedite appointments for care experienced young people when requested.
  • A school nurse liaises with healthcare providers to ensure timely access and sensitivity to the challenges care experienced young people may face, such as difficulties in keeping appointments.

Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)

Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Orkney is dedicated to providing community-based support for children and young people up to 18 years facing severe and enduring mental health conditions.

CAMHS team operates as a dynamic, patient-centered, values-driven multidisciplinary unit, benefitting from the expertise of a diverse range of professionals and stakeholders.

CAMHS operate collaboratively within a multidisciplinary framework, working alongside various agencies to assess and treat children and their families with mental health conditions, extending support to the wider community.

Referrals to CAMHS services can be initiated by GPs, guidance teachers, and social workers.

Alcohol and Drugs Support Service

Weekly alcohol and drug support service every Thursday from 1.30pm – 4.00pm in Kirkwall (Kings Street Halls, 6 King St, Kirkwall, KW15 1JF). This is a drop in service and no appointment needed.

The support on offer includes:

  • Harm reduction information – including naloxone and injection equipment provision
  • Emotional and practical support
  • Support for family and loved ones
  • Access to counselling and support group – the support group operates from 2.30-3.30pm and is a peer group, facilitated by the Drug and Alcohol Team (open to all over 18s and is non faith based).
Aftercare Service (Social Work)

The pathway plan process will assess needs and identify how they will be met, including health and wellbeing needs where these are raised.

Blide Trust Care Experienced Young People Project

Targeted scaffolding support to Care Leavers and Care Experienced Young people, including one to one mental health support and activities to improve mental health and wellbeing (e.g. creative and active opportunities, Out and About trips one Saturday per month, Thursday group for food and activities etc.)

Who Cares? Scotland

Advocacy can offer support to care-experienced young people to:

  • Help them articulate their health and wellbeing needs – provide assistance to engage with services offering health and wellbeing supports
CLD / Youth Services
  • Access to youth clubs, after-school programmes, and holiday activities to promote social engagement and wellbeing.
  • Delivery of workshops and conferences focused on mental health and wellbeing,
  • Alert hotline available for young people aged 14 to 18, providing basic health support and signposting to additional resources.
Advocacy Orkney

Through the provision of advocacy services, Advocacy Orkney empowers individuals to have a voice in decisions being made about them and their families, to access services and to learn the skills they need to protect and care for themselves.

We do not ‘do to’ people, we ‘do with’ people. That starts with listening and learning from each individual to ensure that they receive the support and advice that is most useful to them in the way that best meets their needs.

Counselling Service

Relationships Scotland Orkney

A safe and confidential space for:

  • Individual Counselling to develop understanding of yourself, your situation and make informed choices about how to move forward.
  • Relationship Counselling with a view to understand each other better, to move forward positively or to part in a more amicable way.
  • Young Peoples support helps young people to explore difficult feelings in a safe space and learn tools and coping strategies.
  • Individual Support offers someone practical tools to help manage difficulties such as stress, anxiety, and low mood.
  • The Alcohol & Drug service offers emotional and practical support, help to put a recovery plan in place and/or to explore the underlying reasons for drinking/using drugs.
  • Family Mediation enables people to come together and talk in a safe space with a professional mediator, following a relationship breakdown.
  • The Child Contact Centre provides a safe, friendly, neutral and child centred environment where children can meet with a parent or other family member.

Right There Routes

Routes is our youth work programme which supports young people aged 12-26 years affected by alcohol and drugs within their family.

Routes is co-produced in collaboration with the young people it supports. The views of the young people are central to everything we do.

We offer a combination of one-to-one and group support, running alongside a busy programme of activities and trips, which can include cooking, arts and crafts, beauty therapies, paintballing and so much more!

Right There Counselling

Our Diploma-qualified and BACP-registered Counsellors work confidentially with young people up to age 25 through any issues they might be experiencing, such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, bullying, or substance misuse issues.

Counselling can take place in-person, online, or by telephone, at times which suit the young person.

Women’s Aid

We offer trauma informed support for women and children who have/are experiencing domestic abuse. We have a:

  • Women’s Service
  • Children & Young People’s (CYP) Service
  • Young Women, Family Support practitioners
  • Own My Life facilitators

We undertake risk assessments, safety planning and advocacy alongside offering a range of practical support and emotional care.

We aim to offer support to keep women and their families safer whilst enabling healing and recovery from the short, medium and long term effects of a perpetrators abuse.

ORSAS

Emotional and Practical Support for 13+ survivors of sexual violence. Safety and Stabilisation, trauma informed interventions. No waiting list for under 18’s 18+ offered up to 3 appointments to risk assess, explore and resource survivors before they go on our active waiting list before time bound support for 3 months. It a conflict of interest for ORSAS to support survivors who have also committed acts of violence and coercion.

Cruse Scotland Bereavement Support

Free bereavement support for adults and children and young persons.

Children and young persons up to 18 yrs can receive in person support in Orkney, or online support or by phone.

Adult bereavement support is currently online or by phone only.

We also offer online training information services for individuals or organisations.

Orkney Care and Repair

Orkney Care and Repair support clients who own their own homes or live in privately rented accommodation. They can provide independent advice and support to homeowners (including those with disabilities or long-term health conditions), helping them repair, improve, or adapt their homes so they can continue living safely, comfortably, and independently within their communities.

Crossroads Young Carers

Crossroads Respite is available to Unpaid Carers to enable them to have a break from their caring role.  Visits can be provided at the Carer/Service Users home or out in the community.  Support Workers are trained, registered with the SSSC and are members of the PVG scheme. The respite service is free of charge and will be determined through an assessment and against the eligibility criteria.

Support can also be provided to those without a Carer.

The Orkney Carers Centre

The Orkney Carers Centre provides emotional support, information and advice, signposting and referring to other services, advocacy, Carer Support Plans, monthly support group, Time to Live Funding, training for unpaid carers, Resource library and some mobility aids for loan and PPE to purchase.

Orkney Young Carers

Orkney Young Carers have a dedicated Support Worker and supports young carers under 18 who have adult caring responsibilities.  

This is achieved through providing confidential support, advice, a listening ear and Young Carer Statements.

Free monthly activities are provided for young carers to meet up and socialise, relax, have fun and to give them a break from their caring role.

One to one support is provided for those who don’t feel comfortable in group settings.

Support is also offered through schools and activities out with school and term time.
